Since before I started in business I’ve been setting goals. If you want something, you need to make it a goal.
Why are goals so important? There are a couple of reasons. The first reason is that without goals, you have nothing to drive you forward. Second is that without goals, you can’t make a plan to get what you want (your goal).
I have both personal and business goals. These are the things I strive to achieve. Without them, I’m less motivated to move forward. It can be hard to push through the days if you don’t know what you’re pushing onward for.
Here is how to set SMART goals. You may have heard of this before, but it can’t hurt to be reminded.
First you want to start by writing down your goals, somewhere that you will see them. You can even use pictures of your goals for visual stimulation (perhaps it’s that new Lexus, if so browse over to Google and find yourself a nice picture of the Lexus you want).
When writing your goals follow these SMART guidelines to ensure you’re on the right track.
- Specific – Write down specifically what your goal is. If you want a new Lexus, write down you want a “Lexus RXh” and paste a picture beside it – Don’t write down “New Car”, be specific.
- Measurable – Outline the steps you need to take to get to your goal. Set target dates or landmarks to track your progress.
- Attainable – Make sure you choose goals that you can in fact obtain. If you know you can’t attain a certain goal, perhaps breaking it down into several smaller goals will work.
- Realistic – Set goals that you are both willing and able to work towards. If you aren’t willing or able to do something, it just wont happen.
- Timely – Set a date for you to complete your goals. Having a due date will help you focus on what you need to do to make it happen.
Use these simple rules, don’t make it too complicated, and write it down! Here is a website that can help get you started. It’s called Lifetick. You can set 4 free goals, or pay $20/yr for a full subscription.
